Lately I was in a weekend workshop that was arranged by Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship (SSES). The workshop leader was James Barlow who is the CEO of the Scottish Institute for Enterprise. The topic of the workshop was : Sales. James Barlow started his career as a door-to-door salesman when he was seventeen. Throughout his career he made millions of pounds of sales in Britain and other countries in executive positions. So he experienced all types of sales in the business life.

Here are my notes from the workshop as he didn't use any slides. (It was more funny without slides though.)

E+R=O

The first concept was the E+R=O equation. (E= Event, R=Response, O=Outcome)

The main point of the concept was that the outcomes are not only dependent on the events they are also dependent on our responses. So the responses can change a bad event into something good and a good event into something bad.

One of the problems with the responses was that generalizations, filters, dilutions and even prejudgements affect the way we understand the events. It's known that a person does 7 assumptions in the first 11 seconds that he meets someone. So he assumes many things before he even gets any information about him/her. James calls this :

ASS-U-ME

to emphasize what a wrong behaviour it's to assume everything without learning. He gives an example of a famous manager that starts with the fact that his decision is wrong and then tries to make it right instead of starting with the fact that he is right at the beginning.

He also mentioned dividing big problems into smaller pieces with an example of business plans. The next simple figure shows an entrepreneur with a good plan and an entrepreneur with a bad plan.
Figure 1 - Good Plan vs Bad Plan

The good plan has small milestones so even if you do make mistakes along the way, you can always turn back to track. But a bad plan does not have this characteristics and contains a lot of assumptions and it's hard to turn back to track once you start executing the plan.

Features vs. Benefits

I think this part is especially for engineers who want to do things just because they can be done versus the business people who want to do things because they need to be done. So we listed some of the features of our mobile phones and wrote down the benefits of these features.

Example :

Feature: Calendar
Benefit:
You'll never forget your anniversary again.

So we need to have a "which means that" part in our sentence.

Example :

This phone has a calendar which means that you'll never forget your anniversary again.

I totally agree with this opinion as it reveals the customer value. Guy Kawasaki also writes about this in his book "Art of the Start" and says that we always need to feel a guy who is sitting on our right shoulder and asking "so what ?" question. Then we need to answer it everytime we talk about a feature of our product. Actually, if you come to Istanbul and try to shop in Grand Bazaar they'll immediately find a common thing between you and them and associate the benefits with this common thing of you two.

Example :

- You also support Manchester United ? Then you can watch the games of Manchester United with this mobile phone.

You can also have this benefit list for different customer groups like students, adults, girls or etc. In our courses we have learned about a term "product positioning" which is similar to this. Here is how it goes:

Figure 2 - Product Positioning

So you got the idea ! Fill in the blanks and you'll be able to see your product positioning better.

Well it's not an easy task to summarize an 8 hours workshop into a couple of paragraphs but here are just some "aha!" moments of me and then notes around them:
  • Man forms the habits and then habits from the man.
  • The market has all the resources to teach you what you need to learn. All you have to do is to listen to the market not only your gut feeling.
  • Test and judge instead of talking. Follow Nike "Just Do It" and it'll be done.
  • Be open to the fact that your assumptions may be wrong and possibly they are wrong.
  • Listening to customers is more important than talking to them. You have two ears and only one mouth, try to listen to your customers more in a sales pitch. Let them express themselves and they'll give you all the information you need to sell them.
  • Understand how your customers see the world.
  • Break down the sales, make it easier to buy.
  • Let the customers try the thing that you're selling to them before they buy it. Example: Handing the mobile phone into your potential customer's hand is an effective way of creating an ownership feeling.
  • Don't sell against competition. Instead of criticizing your competitors, praise your product and better make a product/service that'll be praised.
  • Have objectives before going to meetings, sometimes this objective can even be getting a nother meeting.
  • If you can't get back to someone whom you had a meeting with in a week, you didn't make a good job !
Well, I hope I was able to summarize what I have learned in this workshop. Please comment and we can share our knowledge. James Barlow will also feature in Start-up Day in Stockholm on 8th of November 2008.

I know it's been a loooong time since the last time I updated my blog but from now on I'll give more importance to it. As my last post was on February 14 2008, there has been thousands of things that happened in my life. I'm not sure if you want to hear all of them but I'll try to summarize briefly some of them :

1- Now I'm living in Forum student building which is next to the KTH Main Campus in Stockholm.
2- I'm still working in Sun Microsystems as the Sun Campus Ambassador.
3- At school I'm taking a course called CSD Project and we are working on a wireless solution for water quality management. My role in this project is to be the project manager and take care of the business issues. (I need to write a business plan and sort out how this product can be implemented in a cost-effective way)
4- I'm looking for a thesis work which will begin in January 2009. So far I am in contact with many of the companies but nothing is defined yet.
5- I'm getting closer to graduation which makes me both happy and confused about my future. (I'll graduate in the end of May).
6- I applied for extending my visa here in Sweden. I'm waiting for the answer.

Well this was a quick post just to show you that I'm back and will post in English to this blog from now on. My goal is to post at least once or twice a week. You can subscribe to my blog from the menu on the right ---> Subscribe to Posts

* Nej Men Hej ! is an expression you use in Swedish when you see someone that you haven't seen for a long time.

Ve iste beklenen an geldi, Ilknur'un gercek yuzunu herkes gorsun. Kılıktan kılığa girerek insanları nasıl kandırdığına şahit olmak istiyorsanız bu resimlere bakınız. Hatta büyük hallerini görmek istiyorsanız, fullscreen tuşuna basıp inceleyebilirsiniz.

Bu arada İyi ki Doğdun Fıstık !

Sozleri :

Latest news from my side :

The first and the most important thing is that now i'm a proud employee of Sun Microsystems AB. I and my roommate Alper are Sun Campus ambassadors to KTH. As far as I know this is the first time it happens at KTH that there are two people in this position. In this position basicly we will create some events to teach people about Sun's products and make them use these products more oftenly..

Also we will have some contests and give away some gifts to students during this contests. We will target all campuses of KTH so we'll need to work really hard. But this is the easiest part as we love working hard. This is a great chance for us and we'll do our best for Sun.

Next, we eventually began Swedish courses. I hope we'll learn how to speak Swedish until summer. Then i may have intentional courses at KTH or I want to work full time somewhere and of course have a holiday..

Another thing is that, we cleaned our house :D This is really important to mention because it is now the cleanest house in the town :)

Hmm these are all the things those come to my mind about my life in Stockholm. I'll try to write more and add photos here if i have time..

School Stuff !

By Goki

To say the truth, we have a lot of things to do at the school. Especially in the course called, Business Opportunities in ICT, every week we explore two different cases. These cases are real-life cases, in which we read a lot of materials about a start-up and then help them decide what to do next in many situations. Sometimes professors from Stanford and Harvard join us in video conference and we communicate with through a camera and a microphone at the classroom.

On the right side, you can see me and my team for the first assignment, in which we had an interview with one of the best entrepreneurs in Sweden. He was awarded the Entrepreneur Award in 2006 and he was one of top ten entrepreneurs in 2005. So we it was a really great experience to talk to him and listen him for nearly an hour. Actually, one more interesting fact was that, his wife was Turkish :) So he was able to speak Turkish, Spanish, Russian, Swedish, English fluently, can u believe it ? Well, he was really a talented entrepreneur and he was very helpful for us in many way, Thanks so much Alex Breton !

Actually, today i realized that i don't take any pictures here in Stockholm :) Now i'm uploading some pictures which i took a month ago. They are from the main campus of KTH which is really a very big campus. It's so hard to reach to end of it, also it has a great environment..

Here are the pictures, if you click on them, you'll have the bigger versions of them.

Hej !

By Goki

I know it has been a long time since i last posted on my blog but so many things happened during this time. And the problem is that i don't have internet connection at home yet. So, i'm connecting from the school's building at the moment.

The biggest news about my life is that, i moved to Stockholm for my master studies at KTH on 15th of August. So it has been more than two weeks that i'm here. I already got used to the place and people but let me show you around !

Travelling to Kista / Stockholm

After we arrived at the Arlanda Airport with Alper , we took a taxi to go to the main campus of KTH which is located at Valhallavägen. There we picked our keys for our new home in Kista.

So this is how taxis look like in Sweden. Every taxi has its GPS and the price is fixed for many locations. Our taxi driver was from Iran and he spoke a little bit Turkish to us. GPS device helped him as he had problem in finding the address. You can click on the image to see its bigger version.

Our Flat in Kista

At a first glance the place where master students stay in Kista, Allevag doesn't seem to be a great place to stay but anyways it's my new home so i have to like it :) Most people call these flats "containers" but i call ours ; home.

So here is what you see from my window ; Nokia. Well, everytime i look out from my window i see Nokia so i hope in future i'll be seeing my flat everytime i look out from my office in Nokia :)

We are at the heart of IT secto
r in Kista. Times magazine calls Kista as the second Silicon Valley in the world. Ericsson has its headquarters in Kista with more than 9000 employees and a lot of physical presence. Microsoft, IBM, Tele2 and other big companies either have their headquarter or one of their main offices here in Kista.

If we just come inside of the flat we'll see that it's not a very big flat with its 25 square meters area. But it's OK as we are just two here and we know each other very well. I think it wouldn't be a good experience to live with someone you don't know in a small room like this one. Photos will talk instead of me , right now ...

Well you can click on photos for bigger versions but i'm pretty OK with the place. We have our own kitchen, toilet and bathroom but i know some other students share these places with others. So at least we can praise for this :)

This is all for now because i have an assignment to work on but until the next time i write something take care !

According to a recent Manpower survey of 37,000 employers in 27 countries and territories, 41% of employers worldwide and 31% in Europe, Middle East and Africa are battling to fill positions due to a lack of suitable talent. Commonly referred to as the ‘Skills Gap’, this growing shortage, due to social and demographic changes such as falling birth rates and aging populations, will have a huge impact on many employers. Being open to workforce mobility will increasingly be essential for organisations to continue to thrive.

EU member states are in an enviable position: legislation exists that allows employees to work more freely around Europe than in any other part of the world. This enables European organisations to draw on a pool of skilled labour from other countries when and where needed to address talent shortages.

In fact, approximately 1.5% of EU citizens under the age of 25 live and work in a different EU Member State from their country of origin, and every year, 7.2% of EU citizens change their place of residence, of which 15% refer to a job change as the main reason to move.1

Migration has a major impact on the workforce, and movement of workers from Eastern to Western Europe is rapidly increasing. In many ways this is having a positive effect on the EU: a climate of circular migration is emerging where countries that send and receive employees benefit. Those that welcome migrant workers are able to fill vacant positions, and the flow of lower skilled and seasonal workers to parts of Western Europe plugs the gaps that exist there. The countries that workers travel from also experience positive effects: money sent home fuels the economies of many Eastern European countries.

There are, however, concerns with the increased levels of mobility. Employers will likely face a lack of talent due to employee migration to markets where working conditions or salaries are perceived to be better. Organisations can overcome these skills gaps effectively by enhancing their employee training programmes and by offering competitive benefit packages, thereby retaining their valuable workforce and reducing attrition levels.

From the employee perspective, changing to a new employer is often perceived as a better way of acquiring new and different skills. However, providing life-long learning and opportunities for workers to gain new skills by moving between internal positions is an effective way to not only enhance occupational mobility for workers, thereby increasing motivation and productivity, but to also overcome potential talent shortages, regardless of their cause.

So what is needed to further improve labour mobility and address our skills shortage in Europe? The challenge is to create effective systems to make skills available where and when they are needed, including across international borders. Regular and systematic labour market information will be required to track and understand the gaps and bottlenecks in training and the necessary skills employers will seek in the future.

Labour mobility aside, governments should work with the private sector through public private partnerships to ensure that the right skills are jointly created to meet tomorrow’s needs. Furthermore, universities and other training institutions should collaborate with employers to create courses that are practical and relevant for employers’ requirements.

Demographic shifts and economic factors are compounding skill shortages, which could ultimately threaten world economic growth and prosperity. Governments and employers need to counter the effects of these shortages by further embracing and adopting strategic migration procedures together with other workforce policies. Only then can we all – employers, governments and individuals – win in this changing world of work.

A Professor was explaining marketing concepts to the MBA Students :

1. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and say: “I am very rich. Marry me!” - That’s Direct Marketing

2. You’re at a party with a bunch of friends and see a gorgeous girl. One of your friends goes up to her and pointing at you says: “He’s very rich. Marry him.” - That’s Advertising

3. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and get her telephone number. The next day, you call and say: “Hi, I’m very rich. Marry me.” - That’s Telemarketing

4. You’re at a party and see gorgeous girl. You get up and straighten your tie, you walk up to her and pour her a drink, you open the door of the car for her, pick up her bag after she drops it, offer her ride and then say: “By the way, I’m rich. Will you marry me?” - That’s Public Relations

5. You’re at a party and see gorgeous girl. She walks up to you and says: “You are very rich! Can you marry ! me?” - That’s Brand Recognition

6. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and say: “I am very rich. Marry me!” She gives you a nice hard slap on your face. - That’s Customer Feedback

7. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and say: “I am very rich. Marry me!” And she introduces you to her husband. - That’s demand and supply gap

8. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and before you say anything, another person come and tell her: “I’m rich. Will you marry me?” and she goes with him - That’s competition eating into your market share

9. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and before you say: “I’m rich, Marry me!” your wife arrives. - That’s restriction for entering new markets

Mezuniyet

By Goki
